JOB DESCRIPTION

 

  1. Performs appropriate patient intake for a variety of medical and musculoskeletal

conditions. Includes but not limited to thorough history of condition or injury, chief

complaint, assessment of pain level, completion and/or review of past medical history, family history, social history, and medication reconciliation.  Assists other clinical and clerical staff to keep clinic running efficiently when not seeing athletes.  This to include: rooming patients, working up patients and discharge.

 

  1. Performs appropriate physical examination per patient history and chief complaint. Includes but not limited to palpation of the affected area and unaffected area, range of motion testing, strength testing/manual muscle testing/dynamic muscle testing, ligamentous stress testing, or functional testing.

 

  1. Assists physicians in clinical care, including triage, casting, suture removal, DME, PRP, phlebotomy, vitals, communications with patients, and referrals for physical therapy, diagnostic studies, and all other additional treatments.

 

  1. Collaborates with physician to develop a specific musculoskeletal and/or concussion care plan for each patient that includes academic and physical recommendations based on clinical assessment. In office concussion assessment by Athletic Trainer not to exceed “30 minutes” unless specified by physician.  Coordinates with contract Athletic Trainers to complete post injury impact testing at the school prior to appointment in the office.  Prepares for and assists physician with minor surgical procedures, including preparation of patient treatment site.

 

  1. Performs, at direction of supervising physician, appropriate point of care testing and

orders appropriate diagnostic testing or follow-up care.

 

  1. Provides post-operative care and treatment, discusses proper follow-up care, performs

evaluations, and provides patient education and discharge.

 

  1. Triages patient messages, phone calls and questions appropriately. Communicates back to referring provider on behalf of the physician. Manages referrals to specialists and diagnostic tests in a timely manner. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve patient care and customer service.  Communicates with athlete’s Athletic Trainer about appointments and plan of care. 

 

  1. Actively engages and participates in community outreach initiatives. Serves as preceptor to undergraduate athletic training student interns.

 

  1. Complies with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and regulatory

policies and procedures.

 

  1. Documents all aspects of evaluation, testing appropriately within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

11.  Performs other duties assigned

 

Athletic trainer will perform the appropriate initial clinical intake and injury assessments for patients within the orthopedic office setting. Athletic Trainer will act as a first assist in the operating room with the Sports Medicine Surgeon.  When not in the operating room or at athletic events, the athletic trainer will be working in a medical capacity in a clinic setting. Typical clinical duties will include providing patient clinical assessments, scribing for the medical provider, working in close collaboration with the medical assistants to ensure seamless patient flow, assisting staff with obtaining insurance authorizations, scheduling advanced imaging studies and coordinating referrals.

 

The Athletic Trainer is also responsible for outreach athletic training coverage as assigned which includes but not limited to: management of injuries, organization and administration duties, and record keeping.  Athletic trainer acts as a liaison between family physicians and specialists, area athletic trainers, the school district, athletes and their parents.  Additionally, the Athletic Trainer will have the opportunity to provide outreach services to club, city recreation, high school or collegiate teams as well. 

The ATC is responsible for providing prevention, education, assessment, and emergency care of athletes in local high school schools, colleges, and professional teams.  The ATC also works in the Orthopedic clinic under the direct supervision and guidance of the physician by assisting to carry out the plan of care. This includes observation and assistance with the established plan of care in a busy sports medicine practice. Candidate will be expected to facilitate the referral process of patients and athletes to the practice and assist in the follow up reviews of care management plans, test results, diagnostic studies and physical therapy protocols and requests. The candidate will also be involved in the tracking and collecting of patient reported outcomes on a data base to ensure the practice is delivering value-based medicine. ATC must be available to receive phone calls during the off hours from our ATC outreach providers to help triage our student athletes in a timely manner. Candidate will also be involved in management of the sports injury clinic during football season 

Job Requirements

Licenses/Certifications/Registrations/Education:

 

Required Education-

Master’s Degree in Athletic Training

Required Licensures-

Certified Athletic Trainer in the State of South Carolina acquired by start date

BOC Certified Athletic Trainer and Certified SC DHEC Athletic Trainer

CPR and AED certification also required.
