Clinical Nurse Manger – Nephrology (RN Required)

Shall demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the quality management system by:

Plans individualized nursing care to meet the holistic age specific needs of patients in, but not limited to, the Nephrology Unit.

Serves as a clinical expert, primarily on Nephrology, by keeping current with evidenced based practice, literature review and educational offerings.

Fosters an environment that demonstrates caring, compassion, and respect for patients, families, and visitors.

Supervises and monitors the interdisciplinary care of the patient in, but not limited to, the Nephrology Unit.

Competently performs Clinical Management duties in maintaining an organized workflow and open communication including compliance with: core measures, clinical effectiveness initiatives, never event reduction and improving patient outcomes as identified.  This will be demonstrated through, but not limited to, the following (refer to McLeod Health Clinical Nurse Manager Competency):

  • Independent Policy Review
  • Assigned Leadership Classes
  • Access Control Application for the Nephrology Unit
  • Identifying and Accessing Resources for the Nephrology Unit

Ensures compliance with established Cardiology Unit standards, policies, and specific standards of care.

Under the supervision of the Director, the Clinical Nurse Manager mentors, clinically develops and evaluates staff who perform nursing care specific to the Nephrology Unit, but not limited to (refer to McLeod Health Nursing, MST, and Secretary Competencies A, B, and C):

  • Emergency Management
  • Patient Safety Initiatives
  • Patient Satisfaction Initiatives
  • Patient Privacy
  • Patient Education
  • Handoff/Bedside Report
  • Electronic Medical Record Documentation
  • Carrying out Physician Orders
  • Admission, Discharge, and Transfer of Patients
  • Patients’ Full System Assessment(s) and Reassessment(s)
  • Medication Administration to include, but not limited to the following unit specific medications:  Vancomycin and Gentamycin, Blood Pressure Medications, Procrit, PhosLo, Renagel, Fosrenal.
  • Blood and Blood products
  • Waive Testing
  • Infection Control Precautions
  • Prevention and care of Hospital Acquired Conditions
  • Caring for patients with, but not limited to, the following unit specific needs and/or conditions: Daily and Post Dialysis Weights, Renal focused assessments, Peritoneal Dialysis, Bladder Scanner, and Vein Finder.
  • Preparing and caring for patients with the following Dialysis Accesses:  MedComp, Trialysis, Tunnel Cath, Fistula, and Graft.

Continuously assesses the clinical environment of the Nephrology Unit to identify performance improvement opportunities.  

  • Monthly, works a weekend shift and one night shift to ensure all staff needs are identified and addressed
  • Rounds daily on patients with High Risk for Hospital Acquired Condition’s for preventative measures
  • Educates staff of new quality initiatives

Encourages and facilitates use of appropriate health and safety equipment to protect both patient and staff while making clinical rounds.

Demonstrates continued professional growth.

Performs all other duties as they relate to this position.


  • Minimum 3 years of nursing experience

Licenses and/or Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid SC license-RN, BLS
