Job Description

  • Knows and follows institutional pharmacy policies and procedures and medication policies and procedures.
  • Knows and follows state and federal laws regarding dispensing of medications.
  • Accurately interprets and enters medication orders in the computer for drug administration.
  • Ensures that medications are dispensed and delivered promptly.
  • Correctly checks medications including IVs, carts and kits before dispensing from the pharmacy.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationship with various hospital & organization personnel and physicians in order to resolve problems, enhance smooth delivery of services and plan for the future of the hospital and corporation.
  • Coordinates activities of the medication safety committee and subcommittees, including monitoring and analysis of adverse drug events (ADE), monitoring medication safety benchmarks, and proactively assessing risks across the medication use process .
  • Assess and modify the process of computerized medication order entry, verification, dispensing, use of automated dispensing cabinets, and administration, using barcode administration and smart pumps, for safety and risks.
  • Works closely with nursing administration, information systems, and risk management to plan, organize, and implement new policies and processes to ensure the highest quality of patient care possible.
  • Understanding of concepts and application of safety principles, continuous quality improvement, and human factors engineering.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and development in the medication safety through continuing education.
  • Exhibits behavior that reflects a belief in the concept of “just culture” to develop a transparent culture of safety.
  • Assist with protocol and policy development as necessary related to medication safety.
  • Participate in hospital committees where medication safety expertise and pharmacy involvement is needed.
  • Development of educational tools and in-services to reinforce safety processes.
  • Contribute to the continued development of the practice of the profession of pharmacy.
Required Skills

Qualifications /Training:

PGY1, required

Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, team building ability, organizational skills

Ability to work independently, required


Baccalaureate degree or PharmD Degree from an accredited school of pharmacy, required

Current, unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in the state of South Carolina
