Essential Duties

  • The Infection Preventionist helps to improve health care quality and patient safety through the implementation of national guidelines (CDC, IDSA, APIC, AORN, etc.), CMS Conditions of Participation, and federal and state regulations of infection prevention and control practices. They are responsible for the identification, investigation, reporting, prevention, and control of health care associated infections (HAI) using National Health and Safety Network (NHSN) definitions. Through mentoring and guidance from the Infection Preventionist level 2 and 3, they are actively acquiring fundamental infection prevention and control skills. 
  • Maintains a professional image and exhibits excellent customer relations to patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers in accordance with our Service Excellence Standards and Core Values. 
  • Learning to incorporate into practice effective infection prevention activities that are specific to the practice setting, the population served, and the continuum of care. Practices in a fiscally responsible and accountable manner. 
  • Learning to identify the infectious disease process through the interpretation of diagnostic and laboratory reports, identification of appropriate practices for specimen collection, correlation of clinical signs and symptoms of infectious diseases, differentiation between colonization, infection, and contamination, and differentiation between prophylactic, empiric, and therapeutic uses of antimicrobials. 
  • Learning to apply epidemiologic principles to conduct surveillance through basic case finding methods and application of standardized definitions for the identification and classification of events, indicators, or outcomes as outlined by NHSN.  
  • Learning to apply basic statistical techniques to describe the data, calculate risk-adjusted rates, and benchmark against acceptable standards.
  • Learning to use data to identify the need for change and proposes basic intervention/improvement projects. 
  • Report epidemiologically significant findings to appropriate stakeholders within the McLeod Health sites. 
  • Conducts literature reviews, learning to critically appraise the literature and facilitate incorporation of applicable research findings into practice.  
  • Assists in the development of evidence-based policies and procedures. Assists with outbreak investigations.
  • Learning to apply adult education principles to assist in designing and presenting educational programs. 
  • Assesses educational needs of employees, providers, the community, patients, and families, and employs appropriate learning opportunities. 
  • Ensures a safe and clean environment of care including continuous evaluation and monitoring of environmental cleaning and disinfection practices and selection and evaluation of new products.
  • Assesses and mitigates infection risks of design, construction, and renovation projects that impact patient care settings. 
  • Learning to integrate pertinent regulatory requirements into practice. Serves on committees as appropriate.
  • Follows federal and state requirements for communicable disease reporting. 
  • Utilizes basic information technology and systems applications necessary to perform responsibilities. 

Work Schedule: 80 Hours Biweekly. Full Time

Education / Qualification:

  • Associate/Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.
  • Current SC unrestricted nursing license.
  • Certification in Infection Control and Epidemiology required by the 5th year of employment. 

Required Skills: •    Able to apply logical thinking in an analytical manner.  •    Excellent communication skills: ability to interact with diverse groups, fostering collaboration and collegiality. •    Excellent presentation skills •    Skilled to provide guidance, advice, and assistance in problem resolution to render win/win outcomes for safe patient outcomes. •    Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products.
