Health Careers Course
(F1 Health Science Work-Based Honors)
This class is designed for students who are interested in the pursuit and development of a career in the medical field either at a technical school or a 4-year university / college. Students will receive mentorship by McLeod Family Medicine residents and medical professionals, be trained in simulated clinical situations, conduct research on and current healthcare trends, and lead project-development initiatives focusing on community service. Students also intern in clinical areas to observe and study careers in pharmacy, nursing, physician and surgical specialties, medical lab science, administration, rehabilitation, pediatrics, oncology, radiology, respiratory, trauma, intensive care, chaplaincy, nutrition, and more.
The class is instructed and coordinated by Pee Dee AHEC’s Health Careers Program Coordinator at McLeod Regional Medical Center two days per week during the traditional 4th block timeframe and extending into after school hours. This is an honors level 120 hour completely immersive work-based credit-bearing course. It is recognized by the SC State Department of Education as HS 5590 and follows all state Health Science Education standards.
APPLICATION CRITERIA AND PROCESS
- You must be a 12th grade student in Florence One Schools.
- You must have completed required Health Science prerequisite coursework.
- Your acceptance into the program is made by the Florence One Career Center Guidance Department and Pee Dee AHEC Health Careers Program.
- You must complete your application for this CATE course during the spring of your junior year.
